The morning video call starts and the webcam shows the desk in harsh detail: coffee rings on the wood, a mouse sliding past the keyboard, yesterday’s crumbs worked into the grain. That is the exact moment to think about the best rubber desk mat, the single piece of gear that takes the beating so the desk does not. This roundup compares four mats sold as desk mats or desk savers by stated size, material, thickness, heat resistance and care, using only what each listing publishes.

How we scored them
The Office Score weighs performance (stated size and coverage for the desk), build (material and thickness), value for the stated specs, safety and warranty. For a desk mat, safety means a stated non-slip surface or stated heat resistance on the listing; the Gartful and the QPIX state both, and the other two state neither. No listing states a warranty term. How we pick explains the weights.
| Product | Office Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gartful Silicone Mat | 9.6 | 29 | 21 | 21 | 5 | 0 |
| QPIX Silicone Table Mat | 9.5 | 28 | 20 | 21 | 5 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
How to choose the best rubber desk mat
Start with the footprint
Size is the first filter, and every listing here states one. The Naukay is the largest at 31.5 by 15.7 in, the Gartful covers 25 by 17 in, the QPIX measures 23.62 by 15.75 in, and the LBJFYHJN is the smallest at 23.6 by 15.7 in. Measure the desk from front edge to monitor stand, then pick the footprint that leaves the keyboard and mouse on the mat without hanging over the edge.
| Mat | Size | Thickness | Care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gartful Silicone Mat | 25 x 17 in | 0.03 in | Hand wash only |
| QPIX Silicone Table Mat | 23.62 x 15.75 in | 1.2 mm | Hand or machine wash |
| Naukay XXL Desk Mat | 31.5 x 15.7 in | Not stated | Not stated |
| LBJFYHJN Clear Desk Mat | 23.6 x 15.7 in | Not stated | Not stated |
Figures as stated in each listing. The Gartful also states a 0.03 in thickness and the QPIX states 1.2 mm; the other two state no thickness at all.
Silicone or mystery material
Two listings name their material and two do not. The Gartful states 100 percent food grade silicone, and the QPIX states food grade silicone with a rubber and silicone material type. The Naukay and the LBJFYHJN state no material. If knowing what sits under the keyboard matters, the choice narrows to the two silicone mats; the others ask for a leap of faith.
Heat and slip resistance
A desk mat earns its keep against hot mugs and sliding gear. The Gartful states heat resistance from -40℉ to 446℉ with a non-slip bottom, used smooth side down. The QPIX states heat resistance to 446℉ (230℃) with a non-slip, non-stick surface. The Naukay states water resistance but nothing about heat or grip, and the LBJFYHJN states neither. For a desk that hosts a coffee mug all day, a stated heat figure beats a vague promise; see our non-slip desk mat roundup for more grip-first options.
How you will clean it
Crumbs and coffee rings are the whole reason for the mat, so check the care line. The Gartful lists hand wash only and wipes clean with water and a dishcloth. The QPIX lists hand wash or machine wash, the easiest care here. The other two state no care instructions at all. If the mat will live under a laptop that travels between kitchen table and desk, the machine-wash option is worth its weight; our desk mat for laptop guide covers portable setups.
Setup Notes
- Measure the desk depth and width first, then compare with the stated sizes: 31.5 by 15.7 in at the large end, 23.6 by 15.7 in at the small end.
- Leave room for the monitor stand and keyboard on the mat; the Gartful covers 25 by 17 in and the QPIX 23.62 by 15.75 in.
- Route cables around the mat edge; no listing shows a cable channel, so plan the cord path before laying the mat flat.
- Place the Gartful smooth side down, per its instructions, so the non-slip side grips the desk.
- Roll or fold the silicone mats for storage; both silicone listings describe rolling the mat for storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a standing desk mat?
These are desktop mats, not floor mats: they sit on the desk under the keyboard and mouse to guard the surface against spills, scratches and heat. A standing desk mat is a different product that goes on the floor.
How do I use a desk mat?
Lay it flat on the desk; the Gartful instructions say to use the smooth side down so it does not slip. The QPIX lists keyboard pad, writing and drawing uses, so center it under the keyboard and mouse.
Can desk mats go in the washing machine?
The QPIX lists machine wash in addition to hand wash. The Gartful lists hand wash only. The other two state no care instructions.
Is a desk mat necessary?
Not necessary, but the listings pitch them as protection for the desk against spills, scratches, grease and heat. If the desk surface already shows marks, a mat covers them while guarding against new ones.
Which mat here is the largest?
The Naukay at 31.5 by 15.7 in, per its title. The Gartful follows at 25 by 17 in.
