The best office chair mat for medium pile carpet is the one whose pile-depth rating covers your carpet, because a mat rated only for low pile can let casters punch through on a thicker rug. At my desk, the morning usually starts with a 9 a.m. call and a chair that wanders a little every time I lean for the mouse. We compared five chair mats by size, thickness, carpet-depth rating, stated weight capacity, safety-relevant features and warranty term, using only what each listing publishes.

How we scored them
The Office Score weighs performance (carpet-depth rating, size, thickness and stated capacity), build (material, item weight and shipping form), value for the stated specs, safety and warranty. For a chair mat, safety means stated features that keep the mat in place or reduce edge and emission risk: studded or spiked anti-slip undersides, rounded or polished edges, and GREENGUARD Gold certification for low chemical emissions. XINQIDAI states non-toxic, odorless materials and polished edges; Keydol and GORILLA GRIP state studded undersides that grip the carpet; Staples and ES Robbins state GREENGUARD Gold certification to UL 2818. One listing states a warranty term: XINQIDAI with a one-year free warranty. How we pick explains the weights.

How to choose the best office chair mat for medium pile carpet
Match the pile-depth rating to your carpet
Pile depth is the first spec to check, and it is the one that decides whether this roundup fits your floor. The ES Robbins is the only mat here rated for medium pile carpet, up to 3/4 in including padding, and it is also the largest at 45 by 53 in. XINQIDAI states its mat is for high-pile carpets. Staples rates its mat for low pile up to 3/8 in, GORILLA GRIP states its mat works best on low pile rugs, and Keydol lists medium or low pile. If your carpet sits between those ratings, the ES Robbins leaves the most margin.
| Mat | Size | Thickness | Carpet rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| XINQIDAI 47×32 PET Chair Mat | 47×32 in | 1/7 in | High-pile carpets stated |
| ES Robbins EverLife 122183 | 45×53 in | 0.13 in | Medium pile up to 3/4 in |
| Keydol 36×48 PVC Chair Mat | 36×48 in | 0.09 in | Medium or low pile |
| GORILLA GRIP 29×47 Chair Mat | 29×47 in | 0.09 in | Low pile rugs stated |
| Staples Low-Pile Chair Mat | 48×36 in | 0.125 in | Low pile up to 3/8 in |
Figures as stated in each listing. A lip extends coverage under the desk; the ES Robbins lists a 25 by 12 in lip and Staples includes one.
Size it to the desk, not the chair
Measure the floor area your chair actually roams, then pick a mat that covers it with room to spare. The 45 by 53 in ES Robbins suits a wide stance or a desk with a return; the 29 by 47 in GORILLA GRIP fits a compact corner. A lip adds under-desk coverage: the ES Robbins lists a 25 by 12 in lip, Staples includes a lip, and the GORILLA GRIP 29×47 ships without one. The GORILLA GRIP and XINQIDAI listings both state flat shipping, so they arrive ready to lay down.
Thickness, material and grip
Thickness here runs from 0.09 in on the Keydol and GORILLA GRIP to 1/7 in on the XINQIDAI, with the ES Robbins at 0.13 in and Staples at 0.125 in. The XINQIDAI and GORILLA GRIP are PET; the Keydol and Staples are PVC and vinyl. Grip comes from the underside: Keydol states studs that grasp the carpet backing, and GORILLA GRIP states spikes that keep the mat from shifting. XINQIDAI states polished edges and a protective film to remove from both sides before use. If your chair still rolls hard on thick carpet, see our guide to office chair wheels for high pile carpet and our ergonomic office chair for carpet picks.
Read the warranty line
None of the five state a concrete warranty term. The XINQIDAI mentions a free warranty within one year of normal use, but the listing gives no concrete term, so it scores zero on warranty like the rest. A cracked corner or a curled edge would be on you.
Setup Notes
- Measure the floor area first: mats here run from 29 by 47 in to 45 by 53 in, and two include a lip for under-desk coverage (the ES Robbins lists a 25 by 12 in lip).
- Check your carpet depth against the stated ratings: 3/4 in on the ES Robbins, 3/8 in on the Staples.
- Peel the protective film from both sides before first use, per the XINQIDAI listing.
- Plan cable runs before the mat goes down; none of these mats state cable routing, so keep the outlet and any hub within reach of the desk edge.
- Lay the mat studs-down and check that it sits flat; the studded Keydol and the spiked GORILLA GRIP need full contact to stay put.
