A dorm desk fills up fast, and the best under desk drawer for dorm room setups earns its place by keeping pens, chargers and notebooks out of sight. This guide compares under desk drawers and rolling cabinets by drawer count, stated dimensions, material, mounting and stated features, using only what each listing publishes. Fit matters more than drawer count alone, because a cabinet that cannot slide under the desk ends up parked against a wall.

Detailed Review
The Alpen listing states a 5 drawer file cabinet with wheels for under desk storage, office organization and use as a small printer stand. It lists 4 smooth-rolling casters, 2 with brakes, steel ball-bearing slides, a high-strength board build that is waterproof and scratch-resistant, and a flat top for decor or quick-access items. The spec table gives 15.75 in deep, 18.74 in wide and 25.39 in high dimensions, an item weight of 41.4 pounds, engineered wood and a black finish. How we scored them
The Office Score weighs performance, build, value, safety and warranty. For an under desk drawer, safety means stated features that keep the unit in place or keep materials safer, such as casters with brakes or lead-free plastic; the Alpen and SOUJOY listings state such features, while the Sweetcrispy and Bostitch titles state none. No listing here states a warranty term, so warranty scores zero across the group. How we pick explains the weights.
| Product | Office Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alpen 5 Drawer Cabinet | 9.6 | 29 | 21 | 20 | 7 | 0 |
| SOUJOY Under Desk Drawer | 9.5 | 28 | 20 | 21 | 5 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
How to choose the best under desk drawer for dorm room
Measure the space under the desk
Start with the gap under the desktop, because the picks span a wide size range. The Alpen cabinet measures 15.75 in deep, 18.74 in wide and 25.39 in high, while each SOUJOY tray measures 8.2 in deep, 7 in wide and 2 in high. A tray that shallow slips under most desks, while a cabinet that tall needs a desk with generous clearance and room for its 4 casters to roll. If the desk sits against a wall, measure the depth too, so the cabinet does not block a chair or a walkway. A matching under desk shelf for dorm room can add a second layer of storage once the drawer fit is settled.
Stick-on trays versus rolling cabinets
Stick-on trays suit small gear that otherwise litters a desktop, while rolling cabinets suit bulkier supplies and files. The SOUJOY trays hold pens, erasers, adapters and headphones, and they mount under the desktop with tapes. The Alpen cabinet offers 5 drawers and a flat top for decor or quick-access items, plus office supplies, accessories and crafts. The table below lines up the stated sizes so the trade-off is easy to see.
| Drawer | Drawers | Dimensions | Material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alpen 5 Drawer Cabinet | 5 | 15.75 x 18.74 x 25.39 in | Engineered wood |
| SOUJOY Under Desk Drawer | 3 pack | 8.2 x 7 x 2 in | Plastic |
| Sweetcrispy 7 Drawer Cabinet | 7 | Not stated | Wood |
| Bostitch Konnect Drawer | 2-pack | Not stated | Not stated |
Figures as stated in each listing. A tray that measures 2 in high suits flat gear, while a cabinet with 5 drawers or 7 drawers suits sorted storage.
Match the drawer to what it will hold
List the gear before picking a drawer, because the listings cover different loads. Pens, erasers, adapters and headphones fit the SOUJOY trays, while office supplies, accessories and crafts fit the Alpen drawers, and its flat top holds decor or quick-access items. The Sweetcrispy title describes a wood organizer for a home office, bedroom or small place, and the Bostitch title describes an under desk drawer in a 2-pack, with no further contents stated for either. A desk pad for dorm room can protect the desktop surface once the drawer holds the small gear.
Check assembly and brakes before ordering
Assembly and movement decide whether a cabinet works in a dorm room or becomes a chore. The Alpen listing states assembly instructions are provided and required, recommends a two-person setup, and lists 4 casters with 2 brakes for parking the cabinet in place. The SOUJOY listing states self-adhesive mounting with tapes on a clean surface, with no assembly steps stated. The Sweetcrispy and Bostitch titles state no assembly or brake details, so confirm those points before ordering. A file cabinet for apartment guide can help when the room needs larger storage than a dorm desk drawer.
Setup Notes
- Measure the height under the desk against the Alpen cabinet at 25.39 in tall and each SOUJOY tray at 2 in tall before ordering.
- Leave room for the Alpen cabinet to roll: it measures 15.75 in deep and 18.74 in wide, with 4 casters.
- Mount SOUJOY trays only on a clean surface, per the listing, and confirm space under the table for a tray 8.2 in deep and 7 in wide.
- Keep chargers and adapters in the SOUJOY trays so cables stay off the desktop and out of the way of notebooks.
- Plan assembly for the Alpen cabinet: assembly is required, the listing recommends a two-person setup, and instructions are provided.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size under desk drawer fits a dorm desk?
It depends on the clearance under the desk. Each SOUJOY tray measures 8.2 in deep, 7 in wide and 2 in high, while the Alpen cabinet measures 15.75 in deep, 18.74 in wide and 25.39 in high. Measure the gap before ordering, and leave room for casters to roll where a cabinet has them.
Do the stick-on trays need tools?
The SOUJOY listing states self-adhesive mounting with tapes on a clean surface and lists no tools. The listing also states the trays mount under a desktop and suit an office, school, bedroom or kitchen.
Can a rolling cabinet fit under a dorm desk?
The Alpen cabinet can fit only where clearance allows: it stands 25.39 in high and rolls on 4 casters, 2 with brakes. Measure the height under the desk and the depth available before ordering.
What can the SOUJOY trays hold?
The listing states the trays hold pens, erasers, adapters and headphones, with 1 compartment per tray. Items larger than a tray 2 in high will not fit, so check sizes against the 8.2 x 7 x 2 in dimensions.
Do any of these listings state a warranty?
No listing here states a warranty term. The Alpen and SOUJOY listings state features and dimensions but no warranty term, and the Sweetcrispy and Bostitch titles state no warranty term either.
