How we scored them
The Office Score weighs performance, build, value, safety and warranty. Safety means stated safety-relevant features or certifications; the Canon TS4320 is EPEAT Silver and ENERGY STAR certified. Three of the five state a concrete warranty term: the Canon pair at 3 years and the TATTMUSE at 1 year. How we pick explains the weights.
| Product | Office Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canon PIXMA TS4320 | 9.7 | 30 | 20 | 21 | 7 | 4 |
| Canon PIXMA TS6520 | 9.5 | 30 | 20 | 20 | 0 | 4 |
| TATTMUSE A285M Thermal | 9.5 | 28 | 19 | 21 | 0 | 3 |
| HP OfficeJet Pro 9125 | 9.5 | 32 | 21 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| HP Envy Photo 7975 | 9.4 | 29 | 20 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
How to choose the best printer for occasional printing at home
Ink drying is the enemy
The biggest risk with occasional printing is dried ink. The TATTMUSE A285M sidesteps it entirely with inkless thermal printing: no ink, toner or ribbon, and no clogging or cleaning problems. The four inkjets here all use cartridges that can dry between jobs. If you print once a month, an inkless thermal is the lowest-maintenance choice; if you need color, the Canon and HP inkjets trade maintenance for full color.
What you actually need
All five print, and four of them copy and scan. Only the HP OfficeJet Pro 9125 also faxes. The OfficeJet Pro and the HP Envy Photo 7975 include automatic document feeders for multi-page scans, and the Envy adds a separate photo tray. For occasional home printing, print plus scan and copy covers nearly everything; fax and an ADF only matter if your paperwork says so.
Speed in context
Black-and-white speeds run from 7 pages per minute on the TATTMUSE to 22 on the HP OfficeJet Pro, with the Canon pair at 14 and the Envy at 15. Color runs 9 on the Canons, 10 on the Envy and 18 on the OfficeJet Pro. For a few pages at a time, speed barely matters; the gap only shows in long jobs.
Certifications and warranty
One printer states environmental certifications: the Canon TS4320 is EPEAT Silver and ENERGY STAR certified. On warranty, the Canon TS4320 and TS6520 list a 3 Year Manufacturer warranty, the HP Envy Photo 7975 a One-year limited warranty, the HP OfficeJet Pro 9125 a One-Year limited hardware warranty, and the TATTMUSE a 1 Year warranty. Browse the full printers category and our label makers and shredders category for the rest of the home office.
Size and weight
The TATTMUSE weighs 1.5 pounds and fits in a backpack, while the four inkjets weigh 15.4 to 20.5 pounds and live on a desk. The 250-sheet tray on the OfficeJet Pro suits busier households; the TATTMUSE holds thermal paper in a built-in bin. Pick portable for travel, pick a full all-in-one for a permanent desk spot.
